How to unlock Desert

You need 10K Speed to enter Desert. By the wiki's treadmill numbers that is 5,000 steps on the base Treadmill (+2 Speed per step) or 4 on the Astral Treadmill (+3k Speed per step). Trails multiply Speed on top, up to 20× with the Moonbloom Trail; prices are on the treadmills and trails page.

To get here you pass Forest (None), Lake (900).

Hatching eggs in Desert also gives Speed and cash, as the wiki lists under each egg's reward: Jerboa Egg +7.2k Speed, $600; Fennec Egg +8.1k Speed, $1.8k; Camel Egg +9k Speed, $7.5k; Tob Tobi Tob Tob Egg +9.9k Speed, $32.5k; Snake Egg +10.8k Speed, $360k; Sand Spider Egg +12.6k Speed, $1.6m; Royal Sphinx Egg +18k Speed, $28m.

Before it: Lake (900 Speed). Next: Jungle needs 40K Speed. Speed comes from treadmills and trails: see treadmill and trail prices or the full Speed ladder.

Which Desert eggs are worth it

Weighted by the wiki's spawn chances, one random Desert egg is worth $6.64K/s of base income. 3 pets beat that average: Royal Sphinx (Cosmic, $280K/s), Scorpion (Mythic, $18.5K/s), Sand Spider (Mythic, $16K/s). Royal Sphinx alone accounts for 56% of the average, because a rare egg with a huge value outweighs all the common ones.

The rarest egg, the Royal Sphinx Egg, hatches Royal Sphinx ($280K/s), 42× the zone average. You need about 52 Desert eggs for an even chance at one and 173 for 90%; at the zone average those 52 eggs would hatch about $345K/s of other pets along the way.

Moving on pays: an average Jungle egg is worth $8.81K/s, 1.33× a Desert egg, but it needs 40K Speed. Coming from Lake, Desert eggs are worth 41× as much as what you left.

Size and mutations change all of this: a Rainbow Royal Sphinx earns $980K/s at base size, and a bigger one more still. The income calculator does the arithmetic for any weight.
